About

Neighborhood Service Council is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) that provides free, after-school programs and summer day camp for economically disadvantaged children in North Dallas and Richardson. NSC is funded entirely by donations and relies heavily on volunteers to give the childre the crucial one on one time they so desperately need.

OUR MISSION

Expanding Kids’ Horizons – The mission of NSC is to open the doors of opportunity to economically disadvantaged students and their families, expanding their horizons and preparing them to live the American Dream through our quality programs.

OUR HISTORY

Neighborhood Service Council (NSC), has been around for over 20 years; we are a community based 501 (c) (3) organization previously located in the lower level of the Spring Valley UMC. Today we are located at 13959 Peyton Dr., Dallas 75240. Our kids are “neighborhood kids” attending 6 RISD elementary schools: Dobie Primary, Dover, Carolyn Bukhair, RISD Academy, Spring Valley and Northwood Hills. Our summer program pulls from the Parkhill, Richardson North, Richardson West and Westwood Junior High Schools. Our parents are qualified as low income or extremely low income, and the majority is single parent households. Because of the low income qualification, at this time all our students attend the programs for free.

NSC was formed to bring focus, in the local community (Spring Valley/Coit Rd area), on the issues of children of low income families, left at home alone after school and during the summer. Many positive changes were made in the area surrounding our 6 schools; i.e. Cotton Wood trails was cleaned up, NSC was instrumental in helping bring health programs to the families, ESL classes were but a few of the initiatives. We have a rich history and success stories of our kids finishing school and going on to college.

In 2008 the founding ED retired and a totally new staff was hired by the governing board. We are into our third year of “newness,” new staff, new location, new programs, new partnerships. What is not new and has not changed is the need for after school & summer programs (about 100,000 kids in Dallas County need after school programs, 3-6 pm still produces the highest rates of juvenile crimes/mischief, and for every dollar spent on after school programs approximately $8 can be saved in welfare costs, statistics show kids attending quality after school programs do better academically and socially). AND our volunteers have not changed in the way they love our kids and feel they make a difference in each child’s life.

THE FACTS

  • 100,000 kids in Dallas County, ages 5-13, are unsupervised after school.
  • Juvenile crime triples from 3pm to 6pm
  • A child educated only at school is an uneducated child
  • For every $1 dollar spent on after-school programs tax payers save between $8-$12 dollars in social and welfare costs.
