Neighborhood
Service Council (NSC) is a private, non-profit corporation that cares for and
encourages at-risk latchkey children in a multi-ethnic, low-income
region of North Dallas (shown on the accompanying map).
The core activity
of this remarkable organization is providing free after-school and summer cay camp
programs for children whose parents are financially unable to provide regular day
care for them. NSC's slogan is "Expanding Kids' Horizons," and rightfully so, as NSC
not only keeps its kids safe but also leads them to significantly improved academic
achievement, for which it has won local and state awards.
For its children, NSC furthermore opens the doors of public
libraries, swimming pools, gymnasiums, tennis courts and
cultural facilities that normally would be beyond the range of
these kids. NSC is proud of
its results, which are embodied in the hundreds of its children who have gone
on to complete high school and college, and on to find good jobs
in the work force.
In addition, throughout
its 20-year history NSC has been a driving force for community improvements, for example
the following:
|
  |
The Women's, Infant's and Children's (WIC) program;
|
  |
The Cottonwood Park Restoration Project, a massive joint venture to restore a neglected facility;
|
  |
The area's first soccer league,
which NSC continues to sponsor;
|
  |
The annual Earth Day celebration of the Richardson Independent
School District.
