Program Highlights
More than 2,500 North Dallas/ Richardson
Residents Served in 2006
Neighborhood Service Council (NSC) is focused on improving the quality of life for low-income, at-risk children and impoverished adults in North Dallas and Richardson, by offering free after school, summer and evening fun, informal education programs.
NSC’s programs are proactive, results-oriented, and community-centered, designed to empower families to become productive and contributing members of the community.
Hurricanes Katrina & Rita Emergency Intervention Efforts:
- Provided school supplies & uniforms for 64 elementary evacuee students enrolled in schools in our area.
- Actively recruited evacuee students in NSC’s free after-school and summer programs
- Responded to requests to establish Crisis Prevention Family Workshops & Resources.
Year-Round Day Camp:
- Adventure Time provided after-school activities during the school year, and served 102 students in 2006.
- My Time provided day-long activities for teens during the summer and served 50 students last year.
NSC’s Annual Earth Day Celebration:
- More than 2,000 area students were provided opportunities to learn and use math, science, ecology and take part in career building projects in personal and practical ways.
NSC Parenting Seminars and Family Nites:
- Helped 238 families learn parenting skills, share a meal and understand a way to better utilize area resources to become independent citizens.
Renovation of Cottonwood Park Dallas :
- Related advocacy efforts brought new opportunities for camps, recreational and educational programs as well as family outings in 2006 and for years to come.
NSC Soccer Start Teams:
- Provided multi-cultured youth with a fun way to learn teamwork while also helping to reduce unwanted behavior and area crime.
Health Resources:
- NSC worked to bring to the area WIC (Women’s Infants and Children’s) Health Clinic and the North Dallas Clinic, who continue providing information and options to keep children and families healthy.
Cub and Girl Scout Troops:
- Provided ongoing support and life skills training that remain with the child even if the family moves.
NSC Star Builder Career Web Site:
- Created in response to identified need for low-income, limited English and special needs 4th - 12th grade students to learn more about career options, utilizing persons the student might encounter.
- When offered to students via school computer labs, will additionally serve as a fun teaching tool in reading, computer skills, career games, and linkage to relevant calendars of events.
Publication:
- Published the “Summary of Free & Low Cost Programs For 2006” providing information on over 30 North Dallas/ Richardson Programs and Services.
All of NSC’s programs are designed to help children and youth grow into responsible citizens in a safe neighborhood, and provide families with opportunities to learn and achieve a better quality of life. NSC operates with a small paid staff and owns one 15-passenger van. The rest of the work—care and operation of the van, tutoring, event co-sponsoring and many other activities necessary for assisting NSC children, youth, and adults—is done by more than 400 dedicated volunteers and collaborators.
